#NaBloPoMo: Still rollin’!

Today’s NaBloPoMo writing prompt: Do you prefer to have things done for you, or do you prefer to do them yourself?

I guess I would have say that it really depends. I feel like this is something that divides up nicely into four sub-categories: things I always prefer to have done for me, things I sometimes like to have done for me, things I like to do for myself and things I can only do for myself.166055-849x565-getting-a-manicure

I definitely prefer having my nails done for me. It doesn’t happen often but I still prefer it. Likewise, the dishes. Shoveling snow too. Definitely prefer that done for me.

And then there are those things that I like to do sometimes but enjoy having done for me sometimes too. Like cooking. Or vacuuming. (Yes I actually like vacuuming sometimes. It’s a very rare occasion but it happens.)

There are some things, though, that you want to do yourself. I think that’s the sign of something that you truly enjoy. For me those things seem to be either crafty or organizational. Or laundry. I’m pretty particular about how the laundry is folded.

Lastly, there are the things that you can only do for yourself. I’m the only one who can write this blog – for better or worse. I’m the only one responsible for my reactions. I’m the only one who can make myself get up and exercise, make healthy choices for meals, follow through on projects.

Sometimes I think that life would be a lot easier if I could fit everything into that first category and I would have everything done for me. Where would that leave me though? Sitting around watching TV all day while people brought me everything I ever wanted or needed? While it may sound good, I have a feeling I’d get bored of that very quickly. It’s through adversity that we gain strength and knowledge. Without all of those things that I don’t really want to do, I might not be able to appreciate the things that I do get to do. And I certainly wouldn’t know what I was able to accomplish if I never tried.
